“I love this city! I want to live here someday!”, said Hector overlooking the scenic city from the Victoria Peak during his visit to Hong Kong in 2014. Little did he know that he was destined to come here!
Meet Hector, my extremely warm and ambitious classmate from Mexico. In fact, ambition and passion run in his blood. He started as a research assistant in his grandfather’s pharmaceutical company in Mexico and in just a few years grew to the Director of Finance! His grandfather had built this company from scratch and it grew successful in a very short period of time.
When I spoke to him the first time, he had a very personal touch to himself. When I met him at our very own UC Bistro, he spoke at length about how he had been talking to his folks back in Mexico before realizing couple of hours had passed by! I sensed that he has a very close-knit family. He is particularly close to his sister, who is a health and nutrition advisor.
Hector himself is a fitness freak. He is also a salad and meal prep lover! He could not get enough of the salad at UC Bistro! He cooks all these healthy meals so diligently and goes to the gym regularly! I also noticed one thing – although he did not say this to me – that he is extremely disciplined. He follows a set routine and rarely strays away from it. He travels to Central 3 times a week because he has been exempted from 4 core courses! I feel like he is the finance and economics – know it all! Yet he is so humble!
He believes in building personal connections rather than socializing in large groups (similar to me effect?! 😉) He also loves his space! (I hope his roommates give him some – kidding 😉)
Hector had decided to study in Hong Kong long before he met the ex-love of his life, who coincidentally had to relocate to Hong Kong, one year into their relationship. Hector had put in a lot of time, energy and emotions into this relationship and when things did not work out, he was shattered – so much that he gave up the idea of studying in Hong Kong because he did not want to be in the same place as the person who broke his heart. But soon he realized that time will heal him and that he could not give up his dreams for a relationship! I can only imagine how tough it must have been to make that decision and I can only wish to be half as strong-willed as he is.
And now here he is, with us! He has been great support and is surely a person you can bank upon! His encouraging words are enough to make you feel positive in dark times.
